中國武俠小說中有俠客稱 “獨臂刀”，英雄蓋世、除暴安良，劫富而濟貧。西方賭場中則有 “獨臂強盜”，那就是冷血蓋世，喧囂嘈雜，有一身 “金鐘罩(金殼蓋頂)” 和 “鐵布杉(鐵殼護身)功夫的吃角子”老虎機了。


     早期的獨臂強盜隨著時代的進步，搶錢技術和速度也都隨時代而演進；由機械化的單臂式逐步改良，而成為今日電腦化的龐大企業，它用以吸引玩家的獎金給付，也由單機獎金擴大到電腦聯機的累進積數大獎 (Progressive Jackpot) 於是乎，它能吸引到的人就更眾，能搶到的錢也就更多。


     今天，幾乎所有的吃角子老虎機都已經由當初緩慢費時的投幣式 (Coin Drop Slot) 改良成吞收紙幣 (Paper Currency) 和接受信用帳號 (Credits) 的電腦操作方式，早期那種投下硬幣再搬動手把 (Single Arm Handle) 的機器，如今都已經進入賭具博物館中成了 “古董”收藏品了。


     關於獨臂強盜 (Slot Machines) 家族的興亡演變，我們簡單的略述如後：

A Slot machine consisted of three side-by-side reels that displayed pictures of bells, bars, sevens, and various fruits such as cherries, lemons, and plums. After inserting a coin, the reels were set in motion by pulling down a long handle at the right side, when certain symbols lined up in the window behind the horizontal payline the winning will be dropped by coins, otherwise you lose, the machine takes your coin(s).
吃人不吐骨頭的老虎機，早期的設計是內部裝置有三個並列的滾筒，其上繪有各種不同的圖案，如：金鐘、橫杠， “7”以及各種水果圖案如櫻桃、檸檬、黑莓、香蕉等，當客人投入硬幣後，拉動機器右側的長柄把手，滾筒就開始轉動，靜止後，如果在中央的水平線上相同的圖案排列成行，就有硬幣落到底部的鐵盤中，否則投入的硬幣就被吞噬，成為輸家。


Today, almost all slots take multiple coins and have built-in paper currency validators.
